1/2 White or Black English Patch

This is an English fan translation for "1/2 White or Black". It's a dystopian game/VN that involves the Black Side (rebels) opposing the ruling White Side (government). Please note that this is an edited machine translation, with certain plot-critical words, names, and proper nouns being translated manually.

This translation is still unfinished. At the moment, I've finished content to just after the first ending finishes, which is also when things start to open up.

• Content up to the completion of the first ending is all done.
• Zhi's five chapters are also done.
• Other content that starts after the ending is still being translated, and will most likely freeze the game if you try to start it.

Areas I haven't edited yet are buggy or won't work unless you try to jury rig a fix yourself. Once I edit those sections, they should work fine - let me know if they don't.

Some important things to know about this game:

• The game was split into two versions in 2024. I'm currently supporting the version that has the SRPG elements, though how well the translation works in the "Pure" edition is untested.
• The game tells its story through vignettes, told in third person. 
• There are 12 protagonists in here, and the game tries to give an even distribution of screen time.
• You will probably want to put text speed at maximum. This speed matches up decently with how long the characters speak.
• Behind the scenes, the text of the VN sections is problematic. It freezes if it sees a space, and deletes lines if it sees a newline. It also hates word wrap. I found a way to fix this when you're reading the VN lines, but the backlog will look messed up. It might also take a second or two for a long word on the next line to appear.
• There is no way to save in this game. Instead, the game will autosave each time you finish a chapter. If you want to make a manual save, you need to go into the save files and copy the folder there. Also, the game will think you cleared a battle if you exit it, but this can cause some sequence breaking - make sure you finish it before proceeding with the story.
• There is some Chinese text at the very start I can't replace with English (the part where you put a name in). The other Chinese text I've seen should be replaceable, though.
• For certain short lines, there could be translation collisions. This could result in certain lines that consist only of an interjection (like "Oh...") appearing out of place.
• I've reused certain excerpts from the R. Prokofieva translation of "How the Steel was Tempered", as well as the Cyril Birch translation of "The Peony Pavillion".
• I've also lifted some translation snippets of Li Qingzhao's poems from reddustpoetry.wordpress.com, zh.rhymesandvibes.com, and sourcebook.stanford.edu

As for the story differences between the two sides:

• Most of the Black Side is spent on flashbacks. You get a little bit of the "present day" at the start, a bit just before the first ending, a bit at the end of Zhi's chapter, and the Black epilogue. The rest takes place a couple months before the present day, or hundreds of years before the present day. The Black side is also a little bit shorter than the White side.
• The White side is mostly spent on the "present day". You also get to see the Black side characters more here than the White side characters you see when reading Black side.
• You get to choose which side to start with when you begin the VN, but you can't switch until you reach what would lead to the first ending (Tsangyang Chapter 4, Isabel Chapter 4). I recommend Black side first if you want to read in chronological order, though White side gives more world building. Up to you.
